Analysis of the Economic, Environmental, and Socio-Cultural Determinants of Health Expenditures

Abstract

Health is one of the most important concepts in today's world. The state of being healthy must be maintained for the continuation of life. As a result, health expenditures are one of the most important expenditure items. In this context, it is important to analyze the effects of economic, environmental and socio-cultural variables that are thought to have an impact on health expenditures and to make policy implications accordingly. The aim of this study is to analyze the effects of environmental degradation (carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions), economic (gross domestic product per capita) and socio-cultural (infant mortality rate) variables on health expenditures in OECD countries for the period 2000-2019 using Common Correlated Effects (CCE) and Augmented Mean Group (AMG) cointegration estimators. According to the results obtained, there is a same directional relationship between economic growth and health expenditures in Belgium, Costa Rica and Hungary, and an inverse relationship in Finland and Poland. There is an inverse relationship between infant mortality rate and health expenditures in Costa Rica, Iceland, Mexico, Poland and the United Kingdom. On the contrary, there is a positive relationship in Hungary, Turkey and Germany. There is a positive relationship between CO2 emissions and health expenditures in Denmark, Finland and Hungary, and an inverse relationship in Costa Rica and the United States. It is recommended to prefer materials that are less harmful to the nature in terms of use and even recyclable materials while spending on care.
